The butterfly effect – in giant balloons

"I HAVE always been fascinated by the butterfly effect," says Tom?s Saraceno. "A butterfly's movement here will make a storm somewhere else."

An artist and architect trained in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Saraceno sees the world as a vast interconnected network, a notion that pervades his work. His 2010 installation, 14 Billion, for example, is a collection of beautifully interlinked hand-knotted strands, designed so that disruption to any one thread affects the whole piece. It was the fruit of a collaboration with scientists he met during a residency at NASA's Ames Research Center in California.

In an earlier work, Saraceno took inspiration from the three- dimensional structure of webs spun by spiders such as the black widow. He teamed up with researchers to develop models of such webs, then used these models to create 14 Billion, which represents galaxy formation at the start of the universe.

Saraceno's latest work, On Space Time Foam (pictured), now on display at HangarBicocca in Milan, Italy, uses malleable surfaces to explore interconnections between individuals. Constructed of huge transparent balloons that overlap on different levels in the cavernous former factory, the piece allows the audience to experience the invisible links that bind us together by collectively walking, lying or scrambling on the sculpture. "It is a big ecosystem... it makes people aware of their coexistence," he says.

Saraceno not only takes inspiration from science, but also inspires his collaborators to ask new questions. After his NASA residency, he and colleagues submitted a joint proposal to do experiments with spiders on the International Space Station. The proposal was ultimately unsuccessful, but there are likely to be new science-inspired projects on the horizon: Saraceno has just finished a residency at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The Pros and Cons of Business Consulting

The Pros and Cons of Business Consulting

Posted in NEWS! on December 3rd, 2012

The term ?business consulting? means different things to different people. Remember ?The Bob?s? from the famous movie?Office Space, a cult-like classic for office-dwellers everywhere? They were supposed to be ?efficiency consultants?, basically figuring out ways to reduce workforce and cut costs.

There are multiple types of Business Consulting available to businesses of all sizes and shapes. Here are few to think about for your business:

  • Financial Business Consulting:? Companies needing accounting, insurance, or other financial direction and expertise are prime clients for financial business consultants. In a typical financial business consulting agreement, the client (the business) has a specific financial plan in mind and would like an independent, expert opinion on its feasibility.? The consultant will report on the plan?s strengths and weaknesses and offer their own opinions and recommendations as to how the company should best proceed to reach their financial goals.
  • Corporate Strategy Consulting:? Is your competition talking about you?? They should be!? Strategic business consulting and planning is the process of creating a set of offensive and defensive business maneuvers designed to increase and keep competitive advantage over your competition.? This strategic planning confronts risks, engineers through operational and financial constraints, and respects and anticipates legal and other regulatory requirements.
  • Marketing Consulting:? Marketing consultants design and implement strategy for promoting a company?s product or service.? Encompassing more than just advertising, this marketing-focused business consultant can also be involved in social media such as search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM), product packaging, pricing, distribution, and other promotion of the product.? Many marketing consultants begin working with a company with a rigid marketing budget. The goal of the consultant is to optimize the company?s marketing campaigns as to get the best results for their budget.
  • Operations Consulting:? The goal of an operations consultant is to optimize internal business procedures in order to enhance and strengthen the overall operation of the company.? An operations consultant will first observe and understand how the company currently runs, and why it is being run that way.? They will then offer advice on what strategies are working and how to make them work more efficiently, which areas have room for improvement, and what systems could need a complete overhaul.

Pros & Cons of Hiring a Business Consultant

?Pros:

  • Field Expertise ? The main advantage of hiring a business consultant is being able to benefit from and use their expertise in your decision-making processes.
  • Neutral & Objective ? Business consultants are not fazed by interoffice politics, distracted by individual passions, nor engrossed by in-office personal vendettas.? They are a fresh pair of eyes outside of your company?s culture ? take advantage of it!
  • Fixed Cost ? You typically know exactly how much it is going to cost you to utilize the expertise of the business consultant you choose to hire.? With the currently overflowing numbers of potential job applicants, you can remove the risk of hiring a permanent employee by instead working with a contracted business consultant.

?Cons:

  • Cost ? Most business consultants are not cheap.? The financial risk of hiring a business consultant is high, but it can be worth it. If project budgets are running low, it may not seem worth the investment, but if the consultant can expand the impact and reach of the project, they could be worth their weight in gold.
  • Minimal Guarantees ? Most business consultants also don?t come with many guarantees.? Along with the risk of not achieving the desired results, far too many consultants may leave you with some objectives and their opinions, but not help you execute to reach your goals.? Be sure to check with their references and conduct a highly thorough hiring process when searching for a business consultant.

Imagine Growth Strategy strives to be unique. We offer Financial, Strategic, Marketing, and Operations consulting all through one firm.? You don?t have to juggle between consulting firms to get the help and expertise you need.? We offer many fields of expertise, objectivity, and fixed costs (for the most part), but our rates are FAR cheaper than the competition.? This is important to understand because we pride ourselves on our commitment to create and execute (with you) innovative growth strategies to help clients achieve their growth and expansion goals.

We believe that hard work, professionalism, creativity and attention to detail generate growth in business. ?It is our goal to not only deliver the best possible execution of our growth strategies, we also seek to continuously generate new and innovative growth opportunities to ensure the future success of each of our clients. When it comes to our clients, we leave no stone left unturned and no prospect left unnoticed.? We?re in it for the long haul!

Do you have a positive or negative prior experience with a business consultant? Leave a comment, we?d love to hear a your stories!

(AP) ? Authorities in Arizona are looking for an 11-year-old girl with leukemia and a heart catheter who they say could die in a matter of days if she isn't brought back to a hospital after her parents inexplicably took her out of the facility last week.

The girl, Emily, had been receiving chemotherapy at Phoenix Children's Hospital for about a month, Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said Monday.

An infection forced doctors to amputate her right arm and insert a catheter in her heart. The device was set to be taken out before her mother removed an IV from the girl, changed her clothes, and walked her out of the hospital Wednesday night.

Police said if the catheter is left in too long, it could lead to a deadly infection.

"If she contracts an infection, it really could just be a matter of days that could result in the young girl's death," Martos said. "It's pretty serious."

Authorities had been stymied by health privacy laws that kept them from releasing the parents' names, but police said Monday that U.S. Border Patrol stopped the girl's father, Luis Bracamontes, 46, as he crossed into Arizona from Mexico over the weekend.

Martos said the man provided no clues to the girl's whereabouts and denied having any involvement in removing her from the hospital. Police released his name, along with that of the girl's mother, Norma Bracamontes, 35, in hopes it will help locate the child.

Neither parent is charged with a crime yet, but authorities want the child brought back to the hospital before it's too late, Martos said.

He said the family lives a "nomadic" life without a permanent residence, but they have relatives in Arizona, California and Mexico, none of whom have been able to provide police with information about their whereabouts.

The girl's father is a Mexican citizen with a U.S. resident alien identification card. The child and her mother are U.S. citizens, Martos said.

Phoenix Children's Hospital spokeswoman Jane Walton declined comment, citing health privacy laws.

Authorities don't know why the child's parents took her from the hospital, but speculate they might have been concerned with paying the bill.

Surveillance footage shows the mother pushing an IV stand through a hospital hallway. The girl with her right arm removed above the elbow and wrapped in a bandage is seen walking beside her.

"We just don't know what their intent was," Martos said. "But this could become extremely serious if she contracts an infection ... Our primary concern is she get the proper medical care so we can prevent obviously the worst case scenario here."

NATO to discuss sending Patriot missiles to Turkey

President Obama made clear to Syrian President Bashar Assad and those under his command that "the world is watching" and the use of chemical weapons would be "totally unacceptable." If Syria does try to use those weapons, Obama added, there will be consequences. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

By NBC News wire services

NATO foreign ministers will meet on Tuesday to discuss sending Patriot missiles to beef up Turkey's air defenses, a move that could calm Turkey's fears that it could come under missile attack - possibly with chemical weapons - from Syria.?

Foreign ministers from the 28-nation alliance are expected to give their backing to the move when they meet in Brussels for a twice-yearly meeting, sending a strong signal they stand behind their ally Turkey, diplomats told Reuters.

"There will be a decision and probably a statement from the ministers themselves," one NATO diplomat told reporters.

Turkey asked NATO last month for Patriots, which can be used to intercept missiles and planes, after weeks of talks with allies about how to increase security on its 560-mile border with Syria, which is immersed in civil war.

The move follows media reports, citing European and U.S. officials, that Syria's chemical weapons had been moved and could be prepared for use in response to dramatic gains by rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad.

Obama warns Syria's Assad not to use chemical weapons

Syria said on Monday it would not use chemical weapons against its own people after the United States warned it could take action against any such escalation.

"Turkey's request, when it came to Patriots, was to augment its air defenses with the capacity to deal with the threat of ballistic missiles and particularly the threat of ballistic missiles potentially armed with chemical warheads," another NATO diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, according to Reuters.

Osman Orsal / Reuters

A look back at the violence that has overtaken the country

Possible deployment weeks away
The diplomat said the ministers would simply agree on Tuesday to "augment Turkey's air defenses."

"The decision on whether or not to deploy Patriots, and for how long is, like all NATO decisions when it comes to the deployment of military forces, a national one," he said.

The United States, Germany and the Netherlands are the countries expected to supply Turkey with Patriots. Germany and the Netherlands may need parliamentary approval to send the missiles and deployment could take weeks.

Report: Syrian rebels clash with Lebanon troops on border

The first diplomat said that NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, U.S. Admiral James Stavridis, had the power to deploy NATO's own fleet of AWACS surveillance planes if he judged it necessary to counter a specific threat and would not need ministerial approval.

However, there is no immediate plan for him to do so in the case of Turkey.

A dramatic report from northern Syria shows how rebels control much of the countryside but remain locked in deadly battle with government forces who have the fire power. Some displaced civilians have taken refuge in the ruins of one of the Dead Cities of Syria, the ancient city Serjilla, abandoned around 1600 AD. NBC's John Irvine reports.

The NATO foreign ministers will take the Patriot decision immediately after they hold talks in Brussels with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is expected to repeat Moscow's opposition to the move.

Russia, which has a fractious relationship with the military alliance, has been at odds with NATO over how to end the Syrian conflict and has vetoed U.N. resolutions aimed at pressuring Assad to step down.

PhotoBlog:?Turkey scrambles jets as Syrian government forces bomb border town

Turkey has repeatedly scrambled jets along the countries' joint border and responded in kind when shells from the conflict came down inside its borders, underlining fears Syria's civil war could spread to destabilize the region.

A senior State Department official accompanying Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Europe for the NATO talks, said he did not expect final details this week on the number of missiles that would be deployed, where or for how long.

He said the deployment would not be part of "an inexorable move towards a no-fly zone" over Syria, of the sort NATO mounted to defend anti-government rebels in Libya who toppled Moammar Gadhafi last year.

NAPA Supplies Technology to BOURBON's Vessels (Finland)

NAPA Supplies Technology to BOURBON's Vessels (Finland)

NAPA Group, the leading software house for ship design and operations, today announced the ongoing success of its contract with BOURBON, a leader in offshore oil and gas marine services, to provide loading computers for 55 of its offshore support vessels (OSV).

The latest software will enable BOURBON to improve safe loading and unloading with maximum cargo intake while improving assistance to stability, longitudinal strength for operational efficiency.

NAPA has begun and will continue to provide BOURBON OSVs with the most versatile and sophisticated 3D systems on the market; providing ?real time? onboard loading calculations and ship stability analysis, as well as an emergency response system during loading. The software will be installed on twenty Bourbon Explorer 500 series vessels, fifteen Bourbon Liberty 150 series vessels and twenty Bourbon Liberty 300 series vessels commissioned by BOURBON and built by Sinopacific Zhejiang Shipbuilding shipyard in Ningbo, China. Five of the Bourbon Liberty 300 vessels have already been delivered and this extraordinary 55-vessel deal is in full progress with good outcomes for BOURBON thus far.

Matti Salo, President of NAPA for Operations, commented:

?Today?s announcement is testament to the reliability and increasing reputation of the NAPA Loading Computer and aligns with our strategy for providing industry leaders with the tools they need to better perform their OSV operations safely. We remain committed to developing software that supports safety and efficiency in all onboard operations.?

Olivier Daniel, BOURBON Managing Director Newbuilding, BOURBON said:

?BOURBON does not compromise with safety. Our relationship with NAPA has been fruitful and should mature with the numerous coming installations. The effective loading of a vessel is absolutely critical, as the movement of heavy objects onto the ship during loading impacts stability and increases the risk of harm. The installation of NAPA?s Loading Computers will help our crews to improve preparation for and management loading procedures, maximising safety at every stage.?

The NAPA Loading Computer has been approved by all major classification societies. It uses an extremely accurate 3D calculation engine based on sophisticated ship design mathematics to incorporate a range of calculations related to the ship?s hydrostatics.
