Prep football: Undefeated Sutter will rely on deceptive offense in Saturday's NorCal final vs. Marin Catholic

DECEPTION makes the wing-T offense go. So, expect the wing-T-fueled Sutter High offense to have a few tricks up its sleeve when it clashes with Marin Catholic for the Division III NorCal final Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Oroville.

"We saw some stuff on film we can take advantage of ? but not much," said Sutter's senior quarterback Trent Little, a three-year starter for the 13-0 Huskies. "(Marin Catholic) has a pretty good defense."

is expected to attend.

In Sutter, they take their football seriously.

"Our fans are fanatical about it," said Sutter head coach Ryan Reynolds. "It's about the only thing to do on a Friday night."

For Sutter, playing a Bay Area opponent the caliber of Marin Catholic (12-1) is the kind of thing dreams are made of.

"We're anxious for Saturday," said Little, who has engineered the wing-T offense since he was in sixth grade playing youth football in Sutter. "We want to show what we can do against a big school. But they're a great team ? very disciplined."

The Huskies aren't bad, either. They feature a pair of 1,000-plus yard rushers in fullback Nathan Ahlers (1,369 yards, 25 touchdowns) and halfback Mat Sanders

(1,014 yards, 10 TDs). Little has thrown for 1,369 yards with 16 touchdown passes.

Sutter, the North Section D-II champion, has undoubtedly played a softer schedule than Marin Catholic, although the Huskies did defeat Enterprise of Redding, the North Section D-I champ, 34-27 on Oct. 19.

Still, Reynolds said his team has not faced the likes of Marin Catholic.

"Marin Catholic is no doubt the toughest team we've played this season ? without question," Reynolds said. "But my team is not intimidated. They're going to show up and compete and leave it on the field. That's what they do. That's how they're made."

Reynolds said his team played an offense similar to Marin Catholic's spread style in the D-II title game against West Valley of the Redding area. The Huskies prevailed 38-31.

"But West Valley does not have the passing game of Marin Catholic," he said.

Of course, the Wildcats' offense is led by Cal-bound senior quarterback Jared Goff.

Reynolds has some experience against top-notch quarterbacks. His team faced Aaron Rodgers and Pleasant Valley in 2001. That team was also undefeated and finished the season 12-0.

"Aaron Rodgers is the best high school quarterback I've ever seen,"

Reynolds said. "But this kid (Goff) is the next best I've seen."

Reynolds is impressed by Goff's quarterbacking composure.

"He seems so poised and confident when he drops back," Reynolds said. "And the fact that he's fast and can run the football, too, is a real bummer."

Reynolds said his defense, which is led by Butte View League defensive co-MVPs linebacker Ryan Staas and strong safety Phillip Robledo, will try its best to confuse Goff and disrupt his timing.

"We'll run multiple fronts on defense," Reynolds said. "We have a pretty complex scheme with a lot of different looks. We'll try to throw and lot of different things at him and get after him with some pressure."

The Sutter defensive line is anchored by nose tackle Trevor Carr (11.5 sacks) and defensive end Garrett Wallace (16.5 sacks).

"They have a really good defensive line and some good linebackers," Goff said. "They've got some big boys up front."

Reynolds said he and his coaching staff watched Marin Catholic's 31-28 victory over previously undefeated El Cerrito in the D-III North Coast Section.

"We were impressed," he said. "They don't have any weak spots on the field. They're well coached and very disciplined. I was very impressed with their offensive line. When they get off the ball they're not messing around. And they're big."

Does business want a productivity handout? | | MacroBusiness

CEDA is getting a good run in the press today with a survey of its business-heavy membership asking what the big issues are for next year. The winner is improving productivity but?there are some rather worrying trends in that data about how that might be achieved. Here are the first four charts:

That?s all very solid. The top six are all producitivty improving measures and in the right order of priority with the top two squarely the resposibility of business. But when we turn to how they might be achieved, there is a perverse reliance upon government to do the heavy lifting:

And when it comes to actual bread and butter competition, which is where businesses need, in actuality, need to deliver productivity improvements to their own shareholders, enthusiasm suddenly wanes:

But for government it?s all about improving competitiveness in general:

One wonders how indicative this is of Australian corporate managers. There is no doubt that the Australian business media has a bizarre and hypocritical fixation with celebrating every utterence of the captains?of industry, especially those comments that pertain to productivity. Yet it never confronts those same managers with their role in the measure, preferring to blame government exclusively. It?s possible to read this as a moment of epic group think that, like a fog, ?has settled over the entire business sector. Born of twenty years of easy growth, industry consolidation and dimimshing competition, our business elite may well have developed an enetitlement mentality all of their own.

Foreign hackers targeted former military chief Mullen: report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Foreign hackers targeted the computers of Mike Mullen, ex-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, calling it the latest in a pattern of attacks on computers of former high-ranking U.S. officials.

The FBI is pursuing the hackers, the Journal reported. The agency was not immediately available for comment.

Mullen's office confirmed that the retired admiral was cooperating with a cyber investigation.

"Admiral Mullen, now a private citizen, has responded to very specific requests and is cooperating with an ongoing cyber investigation he has been informed is focused overseas," it said in a statement.

The hackers targeted personal computers Mullen used while working on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, after his retirement in 2011, the report said, citing officials and others familiar with the probe.

One official said the evidence pointed to China as the origin of the hacking and that it appeared the hackers were able to access a personal email account.

A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington told the Journal he was not aware of the investigation and that his government prohibits cyber attacks.

China is often cited as a suspect in various hacking attacks in the United States and other nations. Beijing dismisses allegations it is involved.

The Journal report said current and former U.S. cyber security officials say the Mullen case is the most recent example of a series of undisclosed hacker attacks on the computer files of former senior U.S. officials.

Hackers view their computers as an easier way to get access to sensitive information, said these people, who declined to name the targeted former officials.

Elijah Wood: 'Lord of the Rings' changed my life

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

The adventures in Middle Earth are soon set to return to the big screen with the highly-anticipated "The Lord of the Rings" prequel, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," and once again, fans will get to see Frodo Baggins, as played by Elijah Wood. But this time, they'll only get a glimpse.

Frodo isn't the Hobbit hero at the center of this story. In fact, "The Hobbit" is set 60 years before the events of the "Rings" films.

"We learn the story of Bilbo Baggins, which was (played by) Ian Holm in the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy," Wood explained during a Wednesday morning appearance on TODAY. "So this is him as a young man (played by Martin Freeman) going on his first adventure. It's the story of him kind of becoming the character that he is."

It's a story Wood relates to. After all, he feels like he became the man he is during his "Lord of the Rings" experience.

"It was hugely impactful," he said of his time working on the epic films. "The way I think of it is more in terms of how it changed me as a person. I was in New Zealand for four years, made some of the best friends of my life. I kind of grew into being a man. I was there when I was 18 and left when I was 22, basically. So I kind of grew up. It was formative years for me. "

Catch (a little) more from Wood when "The Hobbit" opens in theaters nationwide Dec. 14.
