WSU women's soccer comes home for weekend matches against University of Idaho and University of Hawaii
WSU soccer returns to the Palouse to compete against Hawaii today at Lower Soccer Field, then travels to Moscow on Sunday to face Idaho.
The Cougars (4-1-0) resume action after defeating Wyoming last weekend 3-2 with freshman Kourtney Guetlein scoring the game-winning goal coming in the 80th minute of the match. Guetlein?s goal was her second of the season.
In a press release, Head Coach Keidane McAlpine said it was a tough match on the road.
?It?s still early and we want to be better,? McAlpine said.
Senior forward Brandi Vega scored her third goal of the season to open scoring in the first half against the Cowgirls.
Junior forward Micaela Castain continues to lead the Pac-12 in goals after scoring her sixth goal of the season Sunday. Castain also leads the Pac-12 with 1.20 goals per game and 2.40 points per game.
The Rainbow Wahine (5-1-2) are on a seven-game undefeated streak. Coming off a 2-1 victory against Detroit at home, Hawaii now leads the Big West with 49 points, 18 goals and 13 assists.
Hawaii sophomore forward Tiana Fujimoto is the league?s top scorer with six goals.
WSU is 4-0-0 all-time against Hawaii with a 3-1 victory in the season opener in Hawaii last year.
The Vandals (2-6-0) start the weekend with a match Friday at Eastern Washington. They were also shut out 6-0 by Florida International last weekend in Miami, Fla. The Vandals conceded three goals in each half of play.
The Cougars lead Idaho 7-1-0 including the 2-1 overtime win last season in Moscow. The Cougars have won their last seven matches against the Vandals.
McAlpine said the team needs to start playing every game like it?s their last.
?If we can do that, then I think we?ll be in the right place as far as intensity,? McAlpine said. ?We?ll be in the right place as far as what we need to be able to do when we get to the tough conference that the Pac-12 is.?
The Cougars match on Friday will begin at 4 p.m. and will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
