MLBPA: NHL player union chief Donald Fehr will not return to baseball union

MLBPA executive director Michael Weiner all but officially put to rest the possibility of Donald Fehr rejoining the baseball union.

Last week Yahoo! Sports reported Fehr was discussed as a candidate to return to his former MLBPA executive position in light of Weiner?s declining health and fight with brain cancer.

Speaking to Baseball Writers Association of America members Tuesday, Weiner said Fehr is not a candidate in his mind or in Fehr?s.?Fehr, 65, currently is executive director of the NHLPA. He guided the MLBPA for 26 years before leaving the job to Weiner in 2009.

Weiner did confirm the MLBPA is working on a contingency plan for a possible replacement should he be unable to perform his union duties.

In August,?Weiner, 51, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and is undergoing his fourth round of cancer treatments. He?wrote about his condition?in the May 6 issue of?Sports Illustrated.
